Abstract
This study aimed to propose the statistical treatment to investigate possible causes of dropout in a Higher Education Institution (HEI). The statistical method adopted outlined the student profile prone to dropout according to contingency tables that allows the use of the chi-square test to obtain the association between dropout and socioeconomic status. The results delineated the profile: male gender, 16 to 20 years old, single, not graduated from the University; satisfactory knowledge of the English language; basic computer science, employed, belongs to the family with a monthly income until 1.5 minimum salary, without interruption from private high school to University.
