Abstract
•Four maceral-rich fractions were obtained by float-sink separation method.•Pyrolysis behavior of the separated fractions were further evaluated.•The tar yield from pyrolysis of vitrinite-rich fraction increased to 16.21%.•Prior separation has successfully separated the coal based on its properties.
