•We generate public interest metrics for protected areas (PAs) using Wikipedia data.•PAs threatened by development with low public interest are politically vulnerable.•There are many ‘politically vulnerable’ PAs in Brazil.•Many protected areas under high development pressure have a low public interest.•Public information campaigns should be a priority in highly threatened Pas.
