Abstract
Excavations carried out in the eastern outskirts of Smolensk provided essential new data. The authors use them to make an attempt to examine the laying-out of the city near the Avraamy Transfiguration Monastery in the 16th-17th centuries. The excavations have shown that for construction of the sections of the fortifications adjacent to the monastery the earth taken from the foundation pit of the Smolensk fortress and then upgraded by the Polish before the war of 1632-1634 and the war of 1654. The location line of the "New Big City" ran along modern Zhukov Street.
