摘要
A lead-scintillator sandwich sampling calorimeter, designed to study leading neutron production in electron-proton collisions, has been installed in the HERA tunnel 106 m from the central ZEUS detector. The acceptance of the calorimeter is limited by the proton beam line elements to neutral particles emerging from the interaction point at angles less than 0.6 mr. Both electron-proton interactions and the interactions of the proton beam with residual gases in the beam pipe are used to study the calorimetry of single particles whose energies range up to the HERA kinematical limit of 820 GeV. Some preliminary results are presented on the measurement of the energy, width and position of showers. Previous studies of the calorimeter at CERN in a 120 GeV beam test are used for comparison.
