Hot-pressing transparent MgAl2O4 spinel ceramics were processed by annealing and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The effects of annealing temperature and HIP temperature on spinel ceramic microstructure and optical transmittance were investigated. The hot-pressing spinel ceramic obtains a compact microstructure and significantly improves optical performance by 1100 degrees C/10 h annealing and 1720 degrees C /3 h1150 MPa HIP. At last, the processed Phi 190 mmx6 mm sample show high optical transmittance (82%@0.2 similar to 0.6 mu m), average flexural strength of 147 +/- 13 MPa, and hardness of 12.89 GPa.
