The Significance Of Neutrophil To Lymphocyte Ratio, Platelet To Lymphocyte Ratio And Lymphocyte To Monocyte Ratio In Peripheral Blood Of Patients With Benign And Malignant Oral Lesions

Local inflammation appears to play a very important role in the apparition and development of local tumors and metastases. The aim of this study was to determine the importance of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and lymphocyte-tomonocyte ratio (LMR) in patients with benign and malign tumors in the oral maxillofacial (OMF) region. Material and methods: Medical records of 387 patients diagnosed with oral maxillofacial malignant or benign tumor between January 2017 and June 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Pretreatment neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet and monocyte counts and their ratio neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were investigated. Results: From preoperative complete blood count (CBC) of 387 patients, 151 female and 236 male, 141 benign and 246 malign we found that NLR, PLR and LMR in patients with benign oral lesions were 2.26 (2.03-2.48; SD: 1.35). 107.97 (100.4473-115.5079; SD: 45.2274) and 4.88 (4.5423 to 5.2244; SD: 2.0484) while patients with malign oral lesions had 3.13 (2.85-3.41; SD: 2.95). 129.83 (122.0907-137.5865; SD: 61.6954) and 3.9 (3.6258 to 4.2452; SD: 2.4663). Conclusions: Determining NLR, PLR and LMR can be done with a simple investigation and can help determine the prognosis of patients with oral cavity cancer. Mean NLR and PLR in malign tumors was found to be higher than in benign lesions, while LMR was found to be lower in malign tumors than in benign ones. Furthermore, when combining them there is a greater chance of distinguishing a benign tumor from a malignant one.
