Abstract
Based on the finite element method, this paper analyzes the effects of water's freezing in a hole in an asphalt concrete bridge deck pavement upon the structure by using twenty-node iso-parametric body elements in the software ANASYS, and their sensitivities to hole sizes, hole positions and temperatures of the pavement. The computational results indicate that the stresses caused by water's freezing in the hole (especially tetrahedron one or hexahedron one) are extremely disadvantageous to the pavement and closely related to the temperature of the pavement. This research can provide references for the design and the construction of the pavement layer.
