Abstract
Agrimonde-Terra scenarios of land use and food security in 2050 offer the opportunity to re-examine the on-going debate on the place of animal production in land use and food security, and as a result, of their role in the future of global food systems. The results of Agrimonde-Terra confirm the major role of animal production for land use and food security in 2050. Agrimonde-Terra concludes that a transition to more sustainable food systems will require simultaneous action on the demand side of animal products and on the supply side of plant and animal products, but with some nuances notably the role of animal production for food security in developing countries. Thus, under Agrimonde-Terra's hypotheses all scenarios lead to a significant expansion of agricultural land area in developing regions, especially in Sub-Africa.
