Abstract
The pretreating effects of poplar mechanical pulp with cellulase after a first stage of refining on the reduction of energy consumption were studied. The effects of temperature and pH value on enzyme activities of cellulase, and the effects of the cellulase on the refining performances, physical properties and fiber morphology of poplar mechanical pulp under different treated conditions were discussed. The results showed that the optimized conditions of cellulase were 50 degrees C and pH 5, and the cellulase could effectively improve the refining efficiency and save energy between 4% to 43.3%. However, the results showed that enzymatic treatment had negative effects on the pulp strength properties and fiber length.
