Physico-Mechanical Properties Of Basalt-Clay Bricks

The possibility of using waste weathered basalt exits in basalt quarries with clay in bricks was investigated. Samples made from mixtures containing 90-60% clay and 10-40% basalt were studied. Samples were extruded, dried and fired at different temperatures from 800 degrees C to 1000 degrees C with 2 hours soaking lime. The physico-mechanical properties of dried: and fired samples were tested. The results indicated that the addition of the weathered basalt to clays lowers the maturing temperature of all clay/basalt mixes during firing.
