Abstract
This paper introduces the design and development of a cloud computing based wide area traveling wave fault location scheme. In the scheme, a specially designed interfacing unit at each substation receiving data from specially designed measurement units is responsible for sending sampling data from the substation to the specially developed cloud platform through communication network, which constructs a cloud-based wide area fault location system. In the system, a network-based traveling wave fault location is realized in the fault location cloud. The technique used in the cloud includes the matching for shortest transmission path and initial traveling wave arrival time, eliminating the invalid times and fusing fault distance calculated by any two valid times. Cloud computing based wide area fault location method is designed to be operated in Hunan Changsha and Zhuzhou power system of China, and the initial results show that the scheme is able to offer great reliability, accuracy and efficiency.
