Abstract
Conversion of AC lines to DC is an efficient option to improve the capability of the existing AC transmission lines. Compared to traditional monopole and bipole schemes, the tripole scheme is more suited to conversion of single circuit ac lines to dc. With current modulation techniques, the tripole HVDC scheme proposes an effective way of achieving the AC to DC conversion by adding a third pole to the bipole. The tripole scheme makes use of the full thermal capability of all three phase positions of an ac circuit without involving ground return current, and gives maximum increase in the transmission power, as well as the internal redundancy and overload capacity. In this paper a model of tripole HVDC transmission system is built using PSCAD/EMTDC software, the steady-state performances of tripole HVDC system are simulated and the principle of tripole power transmission is analyzed and verified by the simulation results.
