Suggested Treatment Guidelines For Desmopressin Use In General And Cardiac Surgery

The main aim of the meeting was to produce guidelines for the use of desmopressin in surgery. It became evident from discussions that cardiac surgery should be classed separately from general surgery and the guidelines have, therefore, been formulated for these separate categories. It was clear that each patient should be considered individually, rather than advocating one solution for all Patients undergoing a given type of surgery. Prophylactic desmopressin administration should be carried out only in those patients with congenital bleeding disorders. Otherwise, desmopressin should be given as early as possible when excessive, diffuse bleeding occurs during surgery, regardless of the type of surgery.
