Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) have been an important part of day-to-day medical practice for some decades, aiding physicians in addressing certain clinical situations. CPGs are meant to help physicians perform better, and also to help protect them against malpractice, and help with cost-control.But are they really the best way to improve patient care? Are they applicable to all patients, to all medical centres? CPGs can sometimes induce resistance, or they can be based on the opinion of a group of experts, can sometimes be contradictory and may even hurt the patient or physician, instead of protecting them.When developing CPGs, it is important to keep in mind their target and their limitations, so that they can truly improve patient care.
