Abstract
The present study investigated the anti‐diabetic effects of Rehmanniae Radix preparata extract (RRP) in alloxan‐induced diabetic ICR mouse. Changes of food and water intakes, body weight, blood glucose, insulin, C‐peptide, cholesterol, HDL‐cholesterol, triglyceride, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), uric acid (UA), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in the plasma by administration of RRP(1 g/kg B.W.) were investigated. Body weight gain and food efficiency ratio were significantly lower in diabetic groups than those in normal control group. Concentration of blood glucose was significantly higher in the diabetic control groups than other groups. plasma insulin and c‐peptide level in RRP group was significantly higher than those in diabetes control group ( p <0.05), while plasma insulin and c‐peptide level in diabetes group decreased by 59.6% and 67.4%, respectively, compared to those of normal control group. Plasma triglyceride level of diabetes group was significantly higher than that of normal group, whereas that of RRP, group significantly decreased. Plasma HDL‐cholesterol of RRP group was higher than other groups. Meanwhile, the activities of blood plasma AST and UA decreased significantly in RRP group. In conclusion, the results indicated that Rehmanniae Radix preparata improved anti‐diabetic effects by reducing body weight gain and decreasing plasma glucose and triglyceride level.
