Abstract
There are many similarities between eating disorders and substance abuse. Seventy-two patients were screened for eating disorders during their hospitalization for detoxification (alcohol or drugs) in two settings in Geneva, Switzerland. Body composition was measured and its association with eating disorders investigated. During detoxification, 35 patients (49%) presented excessive snacking, 14 (19%) suffered from Night Eating Syndrome and 10 (14%) from binge eating disorder. Body mass index was normal in 49 patients (68%). Fatfree mass was below normal in 21 patients (29%). There was no association between nutritional status and eating disorders. The poor knowledge among professionals specialized in detoxification can lead to a lack of screening and a less-than-optimal follow-up.
