Scaleabilty And Cascadeability Analysis Of Guided Wave Optical Packet Switches

This paper studies the optical performance of three optical packet switches; the ALCATEL Broadcast-and-select switch proposed by ALCATEL, SLOB (Switch with Large Optical Buffers) by the University of Strathclyde, and a switch having a single loop for buffering, proposed by the RACE ATMOS project. Their cascadeability and scaleability at 622Mb/s, 2.5Gb/s and 10Gb/s have been examined through simulation. As expected, these results confirm that the optical performance of all three switches is impaired by spontaneous emission noise from optical amplifiers.
