Management Of Sacroccygeal Teratoma In Niamey : Study Of 59 Cases In 10 Years

ObjectiveTo analyze the epidemiological and clinical aspects of sacrococcygeal teratomas and review the literature about their management.MethodA retrospective study was carried out in the ward of neurosurgery of the national hospital in Niamey concerning sacrococcygeal teratomas between January 1998 and November.Results59 operated patients' files were reviewed. The mean age was 47.34 days. The pregnancy duration was 8-9 months for 93.44%. Prenatal ultrasonography was done for 7.45% and had made the diagnostic for 2 cases. Cesarean delivery was done for 38.98% of patients. 66.01% were females. The mean weight at the operation was 6.778 Kg. Tumors was type I or II for all cases. Anemia was present and total blood transfusion was done for 70.49% of cases. Coccyx osteolysis was radiologically seen for the half of patients. Surgery was always done after the age of 15 days. Tumors was mixed (solid and cystic) for 68.45%, solid without necrosis for 11.86%, and solid with necrosis for 16.94% of patients. The death rate at 3 months after operation was 11.47%. The recurrence rate at 3 months was 18.03%.ConclusionSacrococcygeal teratomas are frequent in Niamey. For complete resection pediatric intensive care management is necessary. For incomplete resection chemotherapy can be used.
