摘要
IntroductionIn diabetic patients, infectious diseases are more common and more virulent and have a higher morbomortality potential than in the non-diabetic population. Malignant otitis externa (MOE) is a somewhat rare pathology that affects the external auditory canal, and it is characterised by a very aggressive form of inflammation due to infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa at this level.Material and MethodWe reviewed the literature by searching the MEDLINE database for the most representative articles published so far. The studies that we selected studies and reports that hypothesise a link between diabetes mellitus and malignant otitis externa. We selected 19 studies and articles that included patients with type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes and prediabetes with MOE.DiscussionsMost commonly, the elderly diabetic patients and those whose immunity has been compromised are affected. Most MOEs even with osteomyelitis complications are currently curable. However, the prognosis is unfavourable if MOE is associated with facial nerve paralysis or with extensive impairment of more cranial nerves.
