Smart grid has emerged as efficient power delivery management system integrated with communication and information technologies. Smart Grid has capability to interact and manage the bidirectional communication between both the utilities and customers to monitor the energy usage. Nevertheless, increased interconnection and integration increased the complexity and cyber-attacks in the smart grid. In this paper, to secure the bi-directional communication various authorization and authentication schemes are studied. Due to the limited memory and to reduce the overload of authentication with electricity information on the communication line, some lightweight authentication and encryption techniques should be used. It has been found these lightweight schemes has provided security against various attacks. Also, key evolution and management of key provides data privacy for smart grid communication.
