Abstract
Essential oil of Pogostemon cablin Benth. (PAEO) has a wide range of pharmacological therapeutic properties and biological activities and is widely used in the medicine, food and cosmetics industries. However, poor water-solubility and instability limit its application in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) has a specific hollow structure that can form inclusion complexes with essential oil and is commonly used to improve its stability, solubility and bioavailability. In this study, the inclusion complexes of PAEO with beta-CD were prepared and optimized by orthogonal experimental design. The formation of the inclusion complexes was confirmed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, microscopic imaging, and differential scanning calorimetry. The thermal stability, light stability, and wet stability test results demonstrate that the formation of beta-CD inclusion complex has significantly increased the stability of PAEO. By comparing with free PAEO, the PAEO-beta-CD inclusion complexes against common pathogenic bacteria were significantly increased.
