Abstract
HPRTB is a polymorphic STR locus and was one of the first to be evaluated for use in personal identification applications and in parentage testing. Two intermediate alleles have been described before in the Flemish population and consisted in a deletion of a dinucleotide in the sequence flanking the repeat. Intermediate alleles have also been found in the Hungarian population. These alleles were sequenced and one was found to have the same structure as those described in the Flemish population. The other allele showed a 6 nucleotide deletion in the flanking sequence. Independently from foregoing cases, a female showed 3 HPRTB alleles. We supposed that the subject had 3 X chromosomes since this locus is localized on the X chromosome. While the X-linked HPRTB marker is currently less in use, markers localized on the Y-chromosome gain in popularity but should also take into account frequent sex-linked chromosomal abberrations in the population.
