Geometric Boundary Feature Extraction Method Based on Moving Morphable Components (MMC) for Topology Optomization Results

Topology optimization has been widely used in the industrial field, especially density-based topology optimization. However, an important drawback between topology optimization and industrial applications is how to interpret topology optimization results as models with precise geometric parameters that can be used in CAD modeling systems, making them available for sub-sequent optimization and manufacturing. This paper proposed a geometric boundary feature extraction method based on MMC for topology optimization results. In this method, the boundary feature of the topological geometry is first obtained by the active contour method and the boundary lines are identified. The boundary lines of a component are determined by the slopes between the lines and the distances between the central coordinate points. After this process, the geometric parameter matrix of the component can be obtained by using information such as the length of the centerline, the center coordinates, and the slope. Finally, the matrix is used as the initial input parameter of the component of the MMC method, and the model with smooth boundary and precise geometric parameters is obtained through topology optimization. The proposed method is described in detail by a cantilever beam example. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by an MBB beam example.
