Abstract
Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children and it's prevalence in Europe has increased markedly during the last 20-50 years. The availability of effective treatment and modern medicaments doesn't mean always successful treatment of asthma (especially if it is not implemented properly). It is necessary to build a constructive relationship between patients, parents and a team of health professionals who treat a child with asthma. Asthma Education School is part of that relationship, organized since 2006. year in our Pediatrics 'Department in University Hospital Split. In the previous six-year period, we held 39 "Asthma schools" with 631 attendants. In this article we present methods used in educating children and their parents, the aims of "Asthma school", and our methods to encourage the development of self-control and self-help. We will present results of anonymous questionnaire of 522 participants of our "Asthma school". We wanted to assess the acquired knowledge after the "Asthma School" and the total percentage of correct answers to 9 asked questions was 80.3%, while 92.7% of respondents answered positively on the learning outcomes. The results suggest that better disease control have children educated in "Asthma School" who regularly measures PEF and have asthma diary and in all that ways they increase level of self-control, have better use of bronchodilators and effectively treat asthma.
