Abstract
In this study, a test campaign focused on 3D woven open-hole composite plates subjected to compressive loading has been performed. These tests aim at studying the size effect on the strength of open-hole plates. Experimental observations are then compared to predictions of finite element simulations. Three methods to determine the failure stress of the open-hole plates are investigated: (i) the classical Point Stress, (ii) the alternative Characteristic Volume Failure method, and (iii) the softening behavior law ODM-PMC. The predicted damage scenario and the failure strengths are compared with experimental data and scale effects are discussed.
