Abstract
An iron modified phenolic resin was synthesized by grafting ferric ions into a phenolic resin structure through a coordination reaction. Carbon nanotubes were prepared by high temperature pyrolysis of phenolic resin under the protection of argon gas. The CNTs were characterized by SEM, Raman and TEM. The effects of iron content, temperature and time on the formation of carbon nanotubes were studied. The results show that when the content of iron is 0.005, the yield of carbon nanotubes in the pyrolytic carbon is the highest, and the optimal time and temperature for the pyrolysis of iron modified phenolic resin to generate carbon nanotubes are 3h and 1000., respectively. The process of high temperature pyrolysis of iron modified phenolic resin to produce carbon nanotubes follows the "melting carbon-carbon precipitation" mechanism, generating a tube diameter of 80 to 100 nm, a length of several tens of micrometers and a complete structure with about 20 layers of wall thickness multi-walled carbon nanotubes.
