•Risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection among health care workers (HCWs) during the first COVID-19 wave were: contact with relatives or HCWs with COVID-19; close or prolonged contact with patients; aerosol-generating procedures.•Contact with COVID-19 patients was not associated with increased risk of COVID-19.
