•S. mosellana highly accumulated trehalose during diapause, particularly in winter.•Enhanced activities of SmTPS and SmTPP occurred in diapause and quiescence stages.•SmTPS and SmTPPB/C expression profiles were consistent with their enzyme activities.•SmTreh1 activity and SmTreh1-1/2 expression exhibited an opposite pattern.
