•There is serious concern over the increase in mental health problems during the Covid-19 pandemic.•Adolescents living in households where a family member had lost her/his job as a result of the Covid-19 contingency were most likely to attempt suicide compared to their counterparts.•Adolescents living in households where school-aged members of the household were attending classes online during the Covid-19 contingency were less likely to attempt suicide compared to their counterparts.
