Three strategies when physicians provide complex information in interactions with patients: How to recognize and measure them

•We describe analytical machineries to assess clinicians’ use of communication strategies.•Three key communication strategies in the interaction are defined and operationalized.•We moved from taught strategies to specific, observable behaviours that can be measured.•Results are based on multidisciplinary knowledge and use of microanalysis on videotapes.
