•Hyperspectral imaging provides accurate information about burn wounds.•Mixed partial thickness burns are characterized by the Burn Index.•The Burn Index demonstrates an accuracy of 92% on the third day after trauma.•Surgical approach is recommended, if the Burn Index is ≤1.27 after 72 h.
