•Comparing air and urine levels requires considering mask efficacy and pyrene/BaP ratio.•Adjusted 1OHP level is more protective than 3-OHBaP and BaP levels to assess risk.•The urinary 3-OHBaP analysis is not relevant for “petroleum-derived” groups.•3-OHBaP underdiagnoses BaP limit value exceedance for 6% of high level groups.
