•Parabrachiella mugilis is genetically different from P. exilis.•We confirmed the validity of three copepod species parasitic on mugilids.•We report for the first time the COI sequences of Parabrachiella fasciata, P. oralis and P. dispar.•We report for the first time the COI sequences of P. chevreuxi from Argentina.
