•Salivary cytokine levels in children with SCD are higher compared to the healthy controls.•As the medical clinical condition worsens in children with SCD, salivary cytokine levels and gingival inflammation increase.•Periodontal health status of the children with SCD is similar with their healthy counterparts.•Increased salivary cytokine levels may be associated with systemic inflammation observed in SCD.
