•Item Response Theory -based simulation for power estimation for Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System measures.•When there is small sample size or small effect size, it is better to use Item Response Theory simulation for power estimation.•When true distribution of the latent score is unknown, it is better to use simulation for power estimation.
