•We describe a novel strategy for teaching undergraduate students’ empathy awareness.•The Mystery Shopper role is ideal for students’ experiential learning.•Empathy levels were rated as moderate, median 78%, but some were rated too low.•The strategy provides teachers guidance as to underperforming students.
