Heritability of Locomotor Stereotypies in Chilean Horses

•There are no previous reports of heritability of the locomotor stereotypies in horses.•The Chilean horse is a closed registry breed, which could favor persistence of hereditary disorders.•Heritabilities estimated for locomotor stereotypies were low to moderate, suggesting influence of genes and environmental factors.•Mate planning and avoiding chronic stress should be considered to decrease the frequency of locomotor stereotypies in horses.
