•DHEAS, DHEA, and 5α-dihydroprogesterone serum levels decreased in migraineur women.•Neurosteroid serum levels inversely correlated with migraine years and frequency.•Neuroendocrine activity seems reduced in migraineurs as in chronic pain patients.•Neuroactive steroid deficiency could underlie migraine chronicity and comorbidities.•In the management of migraine, supplementation with neurosteroids could be helpful.
