Blood cytokine profiles - Potential biomarkers for asthma persistence into adulthood?

The persistence of asthma into adulthood is thought to occur in 35-65% of children with asthma and is associated with poorer outcomes including impaired lung function (1). Predicting asthma persistence in an outpatient setting using biomarkers could help personalize care with a view to improving clinical outcomes. Cytokines may be viable candidate biomarkers as they can be measured in the peripheral blood and are fundamental to the immunobiology of asthma.
