•We tested the effects of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) on WAG/Rij rats.•Chronic administration of VIP reduced the number and duration of spike wave discharges.•VIP increased the GABA levels in the somatosensory cortex in WAG/Rij rats.•VIP profoundly affected the locomotor activity of WAG/Rij rats.
