•Dimers and trimers were responsible for the geographical separation of the guarana.•Procyanidins of guarana were identified as dimer and trimer type A and dimer type B.•Multivariate analysis separated guarana according to its geographical origin.•A quality control method of guarana to assist the certification of origin.
