•Surrogate virus neutralization assays for SARS-CoV-2 are convenient and rapid.•The Genscript assay has a sensitivity of 100 % and a specificity of 100 %.•The Teco assay has a sensitivity of 91 % and a specificity of 100 %.•Both assays are well-suited to assess successful vaccination with mRNA-1273.
