•The first family of surveys on TD, dataset includes 653 valid responses.•31% of participants is unfamiliar with TD concept, and 27% actively managed TD.•Conceptualization of TD causes and effects with a mind map.•Explorative analysis of variables’ relations with mosaic plots with shading.•Non-coding activities are as vulnerable to TD as coding (heterogeneity of TD types).
