•A novel paradigm was developed to test the talk-alone-effect in adult stutterers.•This paradigm leveraged the phenomenon of private speech.•Adults who stutter do not stutter during private speech.•Speakers’ perceptions of a listener, real or imagined, are critical and necessary for stuttering to occur.
