Between- versus within-person emotional and cognitive reactivity in relation to depressive symptoms

•Evidence supports the importance of distinguishing within- versus between-person aspects of emotional and cognitive reactivity.•With a within-person approach, both emotional and cognitive reactivity were positively related to depressive symptoms.•From a between-person perspective, neither emotional nor cognitive reactivity were significantly related to depressive symptoms.
