Therapeutic Targeting of Hypoxia-A2-Adenosinergic Pathway in COVID-19 Patients

The hypoxia-hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1 alpha-A2-adenosinergic pathway protects tissues from inflammatory damage during antipathogen immune responses. The elimination of this physiological tissue-protecting mechanism by supplemental oxygenation may contribute to the high mortality of oxygen-ventilated COVID-19 patients by exacerbating inflammatory lung damage. Restoration of this pathway with hypoxia-adenosinergic drugs may improve out-comes in these patients.
