•The HLSAC, HAS-A and HLS-EU-Q16 exhibited acceptable to good structural validity.•Measurement invariance was found throughout adolescence and across sex.•These scales measure different HL-related constructs (low convergent validity).•The HLS-EU-Q16 is the one that is less appropriate for use amongst adolescents.•The HLSAC and HAS-A are well suited and valid for 13–19 years-old adolescents.
