•We examined young drivers’ hazard anticipation and mitigation skills in a L2 DAS.•Hazard anticipation skills were lower in the L2 DAS compared to manual driving.•Some, but not all, hazard mitigations skills were lower while driving the L2 DAS.•Skills of drivers with high and low ADHD symptomatology were diversely impacted.
