Looking beyond person-specific cues indicative of credibility: Reward rules and executive function predict preschoolers’ acceptance of (un)reliable assertions

•We tested whether preschoolers use reward rules to deduce others’ credibility.•Generally preschoolers were skeptical of assertions if rules rewarded deception.•Children’s executive function predicted their selective learning from partners.•This ability is useful for learning when little is known about potential sources.
